Many Moments of Modern Mosaics

On my travels, most of the mosaics I photograph are from the ancient Roman Empire. But today’s post is a photo essay of mosaics crafted by modern artisans that I have discovered along the way.

The first two I found on the side of a building in Whitefish, Montana in 2013. They depict the Rocky Mountain way of life.

This past spring I visited Italy, Switzerland and Germany and saw many Roman mosaics. I also discovered a few from this century.

In Florence someone had made a couple of mosaics for a clothing store. Unfortunately they put them under glass so they didn’t photograph well. On the plus side you can see the Florentine buildings in the reflections.

Ravenna, Italy is renowned for its late Roman and Byzantine mosaics, so naturally local artists are inspired to create their own. There was a shop/studio near the basilica di San Vitale where artists made mosaics. They also sold tiles and I really wanted to take a few jars home, but they were heavy and there wasn’t room in my suitcase.

These 3D mosaic Easter eggs were beautiful, if a little pricy.

This “cloth” mosaic was clever. The backing was sheet metal.

The next two mosaics I found on the side of a hostel in Interlaken, Switzerland.

Finally in Trier, Germany in the ancient Roman Konstantin Basilika, there were three bible-themed mosaics on display.
