Book Ends

The other day I returned a book borrowed from a friend. The embarrassing thing was I had never finished it and the book mark was in the middle of the book. I felt bad because it was a book written by her husband’s cousin and I knew the author. There wasn’t anything wrong with the book but I had borrowed it during my “never finishing a book” phase.

For several years I did not finish most of the books I started. I don’t really have a good explanation for this. I’d get a few chapters in, stop reading for a few days and then just lose interest. I finished fewer fiction books than non-fiction. In fact I gave up on fiction altogether for a while.

I’ve finally got over it and am now finishing books again. This past summer/fall I read Ken Follett’s Century Trilogy. Three big books, each bigger than the last, which was almost 1100 pages. (BTW the first one was the best of the three.) I’m happy that once again I’m reading to the end of books.

Now here it is your moment of mosaic. Something a little different today – an 11th century Byzantine mosaic from Nea Moni (New Monastery) on the island of Chios, Greece.
