I realized after I hit publish last night that I had forgotten your moment of mosaic. So today I will make up for it with a pictorial post of Roman mosaics of ships. In honour of the Vikings and their wandering ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ll start with the ancient Greek who went on an expedition to Troy to fight the Trojans and then got lost on his way back home to Ithaca. Odysseus. This mosaic is on the floor of the Sala Rotunda in the Vatican Museums in Rome. Odysseus is tied to the mast so he can resist the call of the Sirens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next two mosaics are from “commercial forum” in Ostia Antica, the seaport of ancient Rome. They were located outside offices of shippers and traders. The first one is for the Navi Narbonenses,\u00a0<\/em>presumably shippers from what is now the south of France (Narbonne).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally two modern mosaics from Ravenna. Far more colourful and glittery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
